Product Reviews
Excellent...even for complete beginners
The last time I touched HTML was about 7 years ago, when "", "
" and "" was the way to write a webpage. I wanted to get back into web design/development and was told this book would help me understand the new and correct way of writing a website.
The way this book is layed out and the way it addresses you as a reader is brilliant. I really liked the way that each chapter contains small exercises for you to do in order to really understand what you're learning about, and at the end of each chapter is a short crossword for you to complete to test you on everything you have just learnt in that chapter.
The book takes you through building 3 different mock websites. You don't need anything fancy to write your website in, just Notepad will do. Each website contains different elements for you to learn about and test out. All of the materials are available for download from the Head First website.
Now, I knew nothing about CSS before I read this book and was worried that it would be too difficult for me to pick up, but this book really helps complete noobs like me understand the basics of CSS. I know now that you use XHTML for stucture and CSS for layout and design.
Don't get me wrong, there are parts of CSS that really struggled to sink in, but I think re-reading the chapter would help you to take it in abit better.
I am now reading another CSS book just to refresh my memory and also help me on the more detailed aspects of CSS.
I highly recommend this book for anybody looking to start out creating websites. Even if you know nothing about HTML, you will by the end of this book.

Clear and easy to follow
This is probably my first review on a book. Head First HTML and CSS is a great book. Enjoyable to read and easy to understand, I am almost through with the book and i am getting really confident creating nice web layouts and design. thanks to the authors, really appreciate your effort in making things clear for beginners who need foundations like this to start from.

Excellent introduction to HTML and Web Design
I like this book. I have a couple of largish HTML textbooks that are thorough and comprehensive. Nevertheless, they tend to be very wordy with few exercises. This makes them somewhat difficult to work from. The Head First Guide to HTML is quite different. It has a uniques style that engages the reader well. In my experience, working through this book is somewhat like having a tutor as well. There are plenty of exercises that test knowledge and understanding, and the text is divided in a manner that makes what is something of a dry subject interesting. One gets a good grounding in basic HTML, and an introduction to CSS and XHTML. The basics of web technology are also mentioned. This book is an excellent place to begin a study of web design.
The book is not suitable for experienced HTML users: it is designed as a beginner's guide and it does this well. Some have complained that the book does not make a useful HTML reference. It is not designed as reference, and the authors make this clear.
Overall, I have no difficulty in recommending this book for anyone who wishes to gain a good knowledge of HTML.

Excellent introduction!
I bough this book hoping to get a better of grip of html, and wow, it did the job so well. Even though it's probably not the best book to be used for reference, it's a fantastic learning tool - fun to read, very comprehensive and it makes sure to reinforce the information in different ways, avoiding getting tedious and repetitive. I got so into it that have now ordered a Javascript, and a PHP and MySQL book from the same "Heads first" line.

Good Beginner's Book
This is a good book for people who have no knowledge of HTML and CSS.
It covers all the basics in a fun and easy to learn way and I learnt a lot from this book. It's actually an enjoyable read and I often dig the book out and use it for a quick reference despite Head First claiming it's not a reference book.
To my knowledge this is the only HF book that's full colour and it really helps bring the examples to life.
The only problem I have with this book is that it doesn't cover navigation menus which is very important and something a beginner would definitely struggle with (or at least I did).
If you buy this book, and I certainly recommend it, don't expect it to be the last book on HTML and CSS you buy. Personally I think Sitepoint'sThe CSS Anthology: 101 Essential Tips, Tricks & Hacks, 2nd Edition: 101 Essential Tips, Tricks and Hacks is a really good book on web design and I would recommend it along with this one.
